Do I have a pension gap?

What is a Pension Gap?

A pension gap occurs when you accrue less pension than you need to live a comfortable life after retirement. This can result in a significantly lower pension benefit than you expected or need. There are various causes that can contribute to the development of a pension gap, such as:

  • Switching employers
When you switch to a new job, it is possible that your pension plan changes or even temporarily drops.
  • divorcing
In the event of a divorce, the accrued pension can be divided between partners, leaving you with less yourself.
  • Working abroad
Working abroad can mean that you accrue less pension in the Netherlands; foreign employers often use different pension plans. Your AOW pension will also be reduced by 2% per year that you do not work in the Netherlands..
  • Part-time work
When you work fewer hours, you also accrue less pension, which contributes to a lower pension amount.
  • A pension plan with a limited accrual
Not every pension plan is equally beneficial. Some plans offer limited accrual options, leaving your pension capital behind.
