Basic health insurance
Everyone who lives or works in the Netherlands is legally required to have basic health insurance. The basic insurance is the same for everyone and covers the costs of, for example, the doctor, hospital or pharmacy. The national government determines the content of the basic insurance. Health insurers are obliged to accept everyone for basic insurance at a fixed premium. They are not allowed to charge a higher premium for basic insurance from, for example, sick or elderly people. In addition, you can also take out additional insurance for costs that are not included in the basic package. Everyone aged 18 or over pays a premium for basic health insurance. This premium varies by health insurer. The insurer may provide the insured with an optional deductible offer (in addition to the mandatory deductible). The insurer is always obliged to also offer insurance without (extra) risk. In November, health insurers will publish their health care allowance for the coming year. Supplementary health insurance
Not all care is covered through the basic health insurance package. That is why you can take out additional insurance for alternative medicine, for example, or dental assistance for people over 18 years old. One additional insurance is not mandatory. The insurer has no legal obligation to accept the supplementary insurance and can therefore refuse someone. The content and premiums vary by insurer. It is worthwhile to compare health insurances.
You must cancel basic health insurance before 1 January, i.e. no later than 31 December. You can have a other basic insurance take out with the same health insurer or take out basic insurance with another health insurer. If you have chosen a new insurance, you must take it out before 1 February. Retroactively, the effective date of your insurance is 1 January. So you will be insured with your new insurer from 1 January. If you take out basic insurance from another health insurer, you can maintain the additional insurance with your current health insurer. You can also have your supplementary health insurance take out with another insurance company without consequences for your basic insurance. Supplementary insurances may not be linked to basic insurances.
The differences between the various health insurers are very big, both in terms and conditions. In addition, it is important to periodically check whether your current insurance still matches your personal situation. With that, you can save a lot of money and are you sure that your insurance suiting is. Do you want your current insurance contrasting? Then click here.
